Jakarta – Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs, Retired Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) General Djamari Chaniago, has assured Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) that the stray bullet incident involving a UNP student will not happen again. The assurance was conveyed during a meeting with UNP Rector Ir. Krismadinata, Ph.D., UNP Senior Executive Prof. Ganefri, Ph.D., and UNP alumnus Khairu Jasmi, a former Commissioner of Semen Padang, at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
During the meeting, Djamari Chaniago welcomed the proposal to relocate the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) military base and shooting range currently situated near the Air Tawar area of Padang. He emphasized that such a measure is essential to ensuring the safety of local residents and the UNP academic community.
“I welcome the proposal for the relocation,” Djamari Chaniago stated.
Meanwhile, the UNP Rector explained that the meeting aimed to secure concrete measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. He noted that the proximity of the military shooting training facilities to the university campus and surrounding residential areas had raised significant public safety concerns.
UNP therefore requested the central government’s support to expedite the proposed relocation of the shooting range. In response, the Coordinating Minister expressed his support and affirmed that the matter would receive the government’s attention.
The stray bullet incident, which occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in the vicinity of UNP’s Air Tawar Campus, left two people injured, including Nova Hirantika, a female student enrolled in the Sociology Study Program. According to the investigation and ballistic examination conducted by the TNI, the bullet originated from a military shooting exercise held in the Lapai area.
The UNP Rector also expressed his appreciation for the attention and swift response demonstrated by the Coordinating Minister and the TNI in addressing the incident. He expressed hope that the commitments made during the meeting would soon be translated into concrete action, providing greater safety and peace of mind for local residents and the UNP academic community.
On the same occasion, UNP also announced its intention to invite Retired TNI General Djamari Chaniago to deliver a lecture on national affairs to UNP faculty members and the broader academic community in the near future.
