Padang – On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a stray bullet incident occurred at the main campus of Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) in Air Tawar, Padang. The bullet, believed to have ricocheted from a military shooting exercise conducted by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) in the Lapai area, approximately 800 meters from the campus, injured two individuals.

The victims were Nova Wirantika (25), a female student of the Sociology Education Study Program at UNP’s Faculty of Social Sciences (FIS), and Guruh Guino, who is not a UNP student but a friend of one of the university’s students. Both victims were sitting with their friends in the square in front of the UNP Rectorate Building when the incident occurred.

UNP Rector Krismadinata, who was near the scene at the time, immediately responded by contacting the Commander of Military Regional Command XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol and the Commander of Battalion 133, as well as the Head of the Regional State Intelligence Agency (KABINDA) and the North Padang Police Sector, to coordinate the emergency response.

At the same time, UNP’s medical team promptly transported the victims by university ambulance to Hermina Hospital in Padang for emergency medical treatment.

The leadership of Military Regional Command XX/Tuanku Imam Bonjol demonstrated its commitment to handling the incident. Major General Arief Gajah Mada, Commander of the Military Regional Command, along with the Chief of Staff, Military Resort Commander, Military District Commander, other TNI personnel, and several military doctors, visited Hermina Hospital to provide immediate assistance and oversee the medical treatment of both victims.

UNP officials, including the Rector, Vice Rectors, University Secretary, and Director of Student Affairs and Alumni, were also present at Hermina Hospital to monitor the victims’ conditions and coordinate further assistance.

Following initial treatment at Hermina Hospital, Guruh Guino was transferred to Reksodiwiryo Military Hospital in Ganting, Padang, for further recovery.

Meanwhile, UNP student Nova Wirantika required surgery that evening because a bullet remained lodged in her left thigh. By the time this press release was issued, the bullet had been successfully removed. UNP’s leadership and the Military Regional Commander, together with their respective teams, remained at the military hospital to monitor the victims’ conditions.

Through its spokesperson, Brigadier General Heri Prakosa, the TNI announced that an investigation would be conducted into the incident and that measures would be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The TNI also stated that shooting exercises would no longer be conducted near UNP’s Air Tawar Campus. Furthermore, the military committed to covering all medical and treatment expenses for both victims until they have fully recovered.
